Kayaking is a great way to genuinely explore the wetlands, the rivers & certainly parts of the Oregon Coast. It is however, so vital to always be safe in all of your adventuring of our beautiful coastline. That is made even more obvious in a recent rescue by our local Coast Guard heros who did in fact air lift a 65 year old kayaker who was in trouble at the mouth of the Salmon River just outside Otis Oregon Coast. Thank you again to our men and women who serve us in the US Coast Guard , especially here on the Oregon Coast.

Tsunami Drill Oregon Coast

Well the much anticipated March 14th. Tsunami Evacuation Drill in Cutler City, Oregon U.S.A. has come and gone. Five editions of the two local Newspapers have been printed but we non-participants in the drill, know nothing of the results or conclusions. Was it as big of a success as touted before March 14th? We did see pictures of people in rain gear, walking across the Highway headed for the Refuge on the hill in the Newspaper and some people looking at their watches, but that’s about it! No results of how many made it to Refuge in the very generous 24 minutes time they were allotted, or what percentage of Cutler City residents took the drill seriously and turned out.

We citizens outside of Cutler City have a vested interest and a stake in any Tsunami Drill along the Coast and we would like to know how it went. Surely it can’t take that long to get some basic results and figures.

So now we can only assume it did not go well, or why wouldn’t they want us to know. Also what plans do they have for the future? It seems even more evident now that we need to start Researching, Planning and Exploring other means of saving lives before a Predictable Disaster occurs, not afterwords!

We have had other Earthquake/Tsunami road shows (their name, not mine) around Lincoln County Oregon U.S.A. recently but as far as I know none of them have any discussions or information of how to save lives before a predictable disaster, except to run to higher ground; the same plan & method our ancestors had hundreds of years ago. It seems to me that every City Official and those others responsible for the welfare of the citizens in their community should have a primary goal of saving human lives, because prevention efforts are much more humane than relief efforts.

We sent men to the moon yet we can’t get our minds together long enough to come up with a solution that can prevent major loss of life in a known predictable disaster, other than running for our lives! At least in this neck of the woods!

There are people in other parts of the world that are thinking outside of the box. People like Brian Tucker who is trying to raise funds for new approaches to Tsunami preparedness in Asia and Indonesia in particular. He is founder & President of GeoHazards International a non-profit organization. They are working on an idea which they call a ”Tsunami Evacuation Raised Earth Park” (TEREP). In Padang Indonesia. The raised earth park idea is to build small hills in low lying areas of a very condensed population. People would live 360 degrees around the bottom of the hill. The tops of the hills would be level and could be used for Parks or Sports fields, yet high enough to be a safe Refuge above the highest level a Tsunami could reach. I am not saying this example would work in Cutler City, Oregon. They already have a hill but it doesn’t seem to work here. It’s just an example of people thinking outside of the box, that think prevention is better than ugly relief efforts!

Here on the West Coast of the United States, Oregon State University Engineers borrowed an idea from the Japanese, that they are attempting to duplicate and test at the University. It is supposedly a Tsunami proof building with a deep strong foundation, that is tall enough to be above the wave and be a safe refuge for near by evacuees on the upper floors. It would also serve as a City Hall. Cannon Beach has opted to be the first to get a building like this. I saw an artists rendition of the one in Cannon Beach. I hope that’s not close to the real one! It was sitting on small concrete stilts built into a huge concrete foundation with a single level ordinary wooden structure sitting on top of the stilts. It looked like it could be knocked off the stilts with a fire hose.

I am all for it and enthusiastically support and commend OSU Engineers & other experts that are finally working on projects that will attempt to save lives before a Predictable Disaster occurs. This is encouraging and definitly a step in the right direction! So I don’t want to be too critical here but it seems to me, at least on this project we might be over looking the fact that our towns & cities are built and laid out totally differently than Japans’, or most Asian Cities. Their cities have a very condensed population that live in multi-story buildings right in the heart of the city. So hundreds of people could get to the Tsunami proof shelters pretty fast, or might even live in them. Evidently still not enough though, as so many lost their lives anyways in Japan!

A shelter building as mentioned above in Cannon Beach, Oregon would only save those working in the building and those fortunate enough to be a ten minute run or crawl away; not many I am afraid! We would have to have many of them spread around the low lying areas to be effective, at $4Million a pop. I think Urban Renewal money (borrowed from China), Electric Car charging stations, walking & bike paths that wander for miles, 8 foot wide sidewalks in dubious places, telephone poles replaced by underground utilities, concrete waves in the middle of the street, board walks going out into the wetlands, elevated sidewalks with a hump in the middle, Etc.Etc. might have to be put on hold and that money be used for Tsunami preparedness, until we can be sure every citizen is safe from a “Predictable Disaster”!

I am still very encouraged about the news in Cannon Beach though. This is the biggest step we have made in the lifetimes of the oldest among you.

Threat of a Local Tsunami Disaster

Around 2004 I began to realize that we citizens living along the Oregon Coast and specifically for me at that time, the Lincoln City area; were and still are, sitting on a Powder Keg and the fuse is lit! We just don’t know how long the Fuse is!!

I am referring to the possible devastating threat of a Local Tsunami disaster, if there were to be an Earthquake 60 or 70 miles off our shore, in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. We have virtually done nothing in the last 10 years to save a majority of lives in the event of a LocalTsunami. If you don’t live or work more than 50ft. above Sea Level, ask yourself truthfully, if you could make it to that elevation in 6 or 8 minutes! I don’t think many could!

That’s why I have been begging for a different approach for the last 10 years, writing to the Newspapers every chance I got but it all fell on deaf ears!

There is a glimmer of hope though. I have to give credit to Debra Smith, “Emergency Management Coordinator” for Lincoln City. She has made a step in the right direction, albeit a very small step, maybe a centimeter long but a step none the less. She has acquired permission to use the Neil Quade property that is across Hwy. 101, east of the Freed Gallery in Cutler City, as a refuge for evacuees from Cutler City in the event of a Tsunami.

The first evacuation drill exercise will be Wednesday March 14, 2012 at 11:00 A.M.

I don’t think Ms. Smith knows what a failure this Drill Exercise is going to be. I think she is trying to do her best to make something positive happen in our Community but she is being mislead by the so called experts. I think this drill will also have a good side too, because I think it will prove that I have been right all along for 9 years!

Of course the State Geologist in charge of this exercise, George Priest and his gang, will have to spin the outcome of the drill in their favor, because that’s their main job description, to fool us and give us false hope. They have actually already started misleading. Priest said in the Newsguard article 3-7-12, that a Subduction Zone Quake would last 4 or 5 minutes with heavy shaking, when it’s over we should make our way to high ground. Number One, I think a Tsunami would be generated with the first movement of the plate, not 5 minutes later. At speeds of 10 miles/minute, every minute counts, 5 minutes = 50 miles of travel toward shore! Number Two, Priest said he timed the walk form the furthest point in Cutler City to the refuge at 24 minutes. He also said Cutler City Residents will have 25 minutes before the Tsunami arrives; isn’t that a convenient figure; one minute longer than it takes to get to higher ground. If the walk had taken him 19 minutes, would he have said the Tsunami would arrive in 20 minutes?

I think he has also lied to us! The truth is by using the Scientists & Geologists own figures and applying simple Math. we can come up with these results. This type of Tsunami travels between 500 & 600 MPH. The Subduction Zone is between 60 to 70 miles offshore, depending on where you are on the Oregon Coast. Using the simpler 600 MPH figure, 600 divided by 60 minutes, equals 10 miles per minute (speed of wave). So 10 miles per minute divided into 60 miles is 6 minutes. Six minutes is fastest time a Tsunami wave would hit shore.

If the wave were traveling 500 MPH, with the same distance (60 miles) it would be 7.19 minutes. At 500 MPH & 70 miles out — 8.39 minutes, this is the slowest or most time we would have. At 600MPH & 70 miles out – 7 minutes. So you can see using their figures & simple math. we have between 6 & a little over 8 minutes after a Tsunami is generated to get to high ground. What ever high ground is? I have heard everything from 50Ft. to 100Ft. You can subtract 5 minutes if you are going to stand around waiting for the shaking to stop also! There could be a slight variance in time due to the different types of Sea Floor, near shore, at different locations.

If you don’t believe my figures, the definitive proof is the recent Japanese Tsunami. The fault offshore there, was close to the same distance as ours, it took 8 minutes to hit shore after the Quake!!

Anyways I don’t see how George Priest pulls 25 minutes out of thin air? Except that it is a convenient figure to suit his 24 minute walk across Cutler City. It’s possible they don’t want to create a panic I guess. I believe we need to know the truth though, we are lied to all the time by our Government. Confronting & knowing the truth will allow us to start creating solutions to this dilemma that are really meaningful. Not pecking around the edges with false, feelgood, primitive, solutions our ancestors would have had no choice but to use. We are in the 21st Century of Space age Technology. We can solve and overcome this threat and save everyone too!

It appears they only thought of saving healthy middle aged adults. What about the very young (infants & very young children); the elderly; invalids; the obese; people with respiratory & heart conditions; people who need walkers, canes or crutches to get around. Do we just let them drown?

We drove up a random logging road and discovered the panoramic photo opportunity of a lifetime. I was certainly grateful we were in a 4×4 truck, Dogde Ramcharger to be specific, yes Miles I am and was grateful.
The further we went, the more nervous I became. And then, I ‘saw the shot, I saw the view’ that you all will see in the video… Thank you Miles for bringing me to this random road, this logging road to genuinely find what most would not see of the Oregon Coast looking over Lincoln City Oregon Coast !

We decided to end our 2011 by adventuring! We drove onto the beach at North 15th Street in the Oceanlake district. It was a bit nippy, however tons of people were out and about enjoying the beach as well. I have always been fascinated with tidepools and every chance I get, I am looking for any type of sea life. The adventure with the high tide on New Years Eve was fun even though, because of high tide, we did not get to see too much. We absolutely love the ocean and all of it’s highs and lows The video is a little long, however great shots and gets you into the spirit of adventuring tide pools on the Oregon Coast just for the fun. Enjoy !

Ginger Saves Seniors Life on the Oregon Coast

There are many senior citizens along the Oregon Coast. They are the folks who have either grown up at the coast or the ones who move to the Oregon Coast on purpose after they retire. The seniors are the folks you are most likely to see walking daily on the Oregon Beaches. Today I came across a beautiful vibrant 70 year old woman walking with her dog Ginger. This dear lady was wearing short sleeves, walking briskly in brisk winter weather and had the most beautiful smile as she approached me.
First I met Ginger, a little long haired Doxie – Chihuahua mix breed 3 year old happy dog. She hesitated, I spoke and she ran up to greet me. Then her companion, this dear lady approached and began to share with me the story of Ginger and how she saved her life. This lady who lives on the Oregon Coast, alone in a trailer park, had adopted a Corgie pup. She had found that the Corgie pup was very active and getting up all through the night. The lady felt bad and decided it would be best to give the Corgie back to the family for placement with a younger family. The lady was really grieving over missing her young pup and had become very depressed and withdrawn. Then a neighbor came by and said Ginger’s owner had passed away and Ginger really needed a good home. Ginger was of course already house trained and was used to being a lap dog to her invalid previous companion.
This dear lady immediately was moved deeply by adopting Ginger and began walking again on the beach daily, sometimes twice daily. She and Ginger are inseparable. As I thanked her for sharing, I shook her hand and wished her a Merry Christmas … and of course Ginger sat up with a smile on her face and said good bye.
I knew I truly had witnessed something so vital to us all, we need to be needed and we need someone to motivate us. For Seniors living alone, what better than to have a loving pet walk with us daily on the beautiful Oregon Coast.Thank you Ginger

Being a transplant from Southern California, I probably look at things just a little different than a “local” who has lived here all their life. I think that is a good thing.
Our little hidden treasure on the Oregon Coast still strikes me with awe every time I see it, namely the beach or any beach here on the Oregon Coast. For some people they may relate to the mountains, or the desert or ?
For me, it is the beaches of Oregon that call to me.
It is the love of those Oregon Beaches that gets me out of my home ( in Otis Oregon) and going even just into town in Lincoln City Oregon to take a peak. You will never catch me ever not taking a peak. I absolutely love any time of year on the coast, but especially summer time. Why? because it brings other folks like me, who simply just want to be there, be around the ocean, be a part of feeling the amazing wonder of this beautiful awesome coastline.
Something I have really been amazed with since I now call Oregon Coast my home: people that come to the coast find ways to enjoy our coastline that even I had no idea could be done … Kite Surfing I had never seen until recently. And oh my gosh, people fly really big kites , huge/ humungous kites right from our very own Lincoln City Oregon Coast Beaches …
I love to see the “tourists” come and show us all the wonder and beauty of where we live. Part of me is selfish in that thought because it helps our very own local economy, which is predominantly dependent on the tourist season (summer).
So to each and every one of you folks who love the beach as I do (or not) , thank you for all you bring and all you spend and all you enjoy of our local wonder and hidden treasure on the Oregon Coast.

We decided to go out bright and early and see what was going on the very first day of 2010 in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast.

What was so cool was to notice that almost all of our hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and vacation rental homes seemed to be occupied. The reason I say it is cool, it means our area has funds coming in and folks being able to keep their jobs. It means we may be preparing for a much better 2010 on the Oregon Coast.

So, to all you wonderful people who spent the holidays staying on the Oregon Coast, Thank you most Sincerely.

Tsunami alarms have been going off all night.

Japans 8.9 earthquake has triggered the (6) tsunami sirens in Lincoln City that go off for 3 minutes.

It is indicated by Jim Kusz on the Channel 2 News that everyone knows where to go.

Mutt Masters Dog Show & Olympics

Our first time going to the Lincoln City Oregon Annual for fun Dog Show was a total blast and gave us a chance to enjoy a whole bunch of like minded people and their pets.

It was so fun even just going in through the entry because everyone was happy and friendly and especially the four legged amazing array of breeds that brought their human friends to enjoy this day.

Rare Oregon Coast treasure – Camp Westwind

The Oregon Coast is home to absolutely stunning beaches and lots of greenery (trees and something I was able to have the privilege to Explore on this very day – Camp Westwind. Camp Westwind is one of those areas of the Oregon Coast that is not or has not been easily accessible, especially to the public. That made our excursion today that much more exciting, we were allowed into Camp Westwind, well more like , invited into the most amazing and pristine beauty, natural beauty on the Oregon Coast.

I did a full photo journey of our Camp Westwind experience and you can view that on our Explore Oregon Coast flickr stream shown here on our site. In addition I took 3 different videos that I have uploaded to our Lincoln City Oregon Coast youtube channel.

We had the privilege of speaking with the Executive Director Dave Martin, what a genuine gentleman and a great asset to the Westwind Stewardship Group who are the folks who now own and maintain the Camp Westwind. Mr. Martin brings his love of natural beauty, his knowledge of maintaining nature and teaching our children what nature and the outside world are all about and most certainly how to respect and nurture. Dave Martin has been running the Camp for 3 years and is excited to have people learn more about what the camp has to offer, even unique locations for Oregon Coast weddings

We met some neat people who shared this rare Oregon Coast view into Camp Westwind , one lady had attended the camp back in the late 1950′s and shared with us what she enjoyed in those years. Another family shared with us their experience of attending the Outdoor School that is offered by Camp Westwind.

Our impression: Wow ! We were so thrilled just to be privvy to their secret beaches and areas that are not otherwise accessible. Then to find out that this 529 acre site is always going to be saved for our children and their children to enjoy the natural beauty and learn about the Oregon Coast was the ultimate thrill .

Thank you Camp Westwind for a phenomenal experience, great food, great conversation, amazing hiking trails and new found friends.

Spent the evening in Chinook Winds casino at lincoln city beach on the Oregon coast. The next morning the wife and I went for our morning walk. We walk 1+ miles from the casino heading North on the beach until we dead ended at the Norther rocks. This is where I shot the footage of the beach surf against rocks while kids were playing on the rocks. They had a great time and so did we. After about 20 minutes we headed back with perfect weather above our heads.

The Beach Lunch Box from Tsunami Coffee and Chocolate Company looks like it’s shaping up to be the deal of the season. It includes a ham sandwich, a serving of macaroni salad, a pickle, and a soda, and it comes in a disposable box which makes it perfect for taking onto the nearest beach access for an impromptu picnic- and you certainly won’t have to go far- Tsunami is right next door to one of the most popular access points in Lincoln City. Tsunami also offers a wide variety of beverages both hot and cold, and panini sandwiches round out the menu for those of you who aren’t keen on the ham option offered in the Beach Lunch Box (which is only $5.50, by the way!).

Tsunami is my favorite coffee shop in Lincoln City- I’ve brought dates there, I’ve gone there to write, and their Chai tea is the best I’ve had in town. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, and after meeting the owner Sherry Fitch today, I can understand why. She seems to me to be a lady who knows her business inside and out, and has no problem finding points of appeal for the local consumers and tourists alike.

Tsunami Coffee and Chocolate Company is a must for those looking to get the most out of their stay on the Oregon Coast, and Lincoln City is the place to find it. So drop by and have a cup of coffee or one of Sherry’s beautifully crafted chocolates, and see for yourself. I know I can’t stay away.

A recent adventure to the Neskowin Petrified forest? Well, I know the locals call it Stumps, it felt like we had stepped back in time.
This is a must see if you are able to catch a minus tide in Neskowin specific ( tide tables are specific to region/area) on the Oregon Coast Beaches.
If like most folks you always had a little curiosity about what it was like to live in the time of prehistoric creatures and what the area may have looked like, you will feel the possibilities in this adventure.

While I was at Lincoln City, Oregon coast 1 Jan 2010 (New Year’s Day), I went for a 5mile walk. Great to have a video camera on board. Watch the wicked beach surf during the shoot. Meditate on the wave action. You’ll get drawn into the crazy surf, little birds in search of sea crustations, etc. Use the log as a reference point as you enjoy this relaxing mind, body soul activity. Tsunamis are on everyone’s mind today at the Oregon Coast as reports of a tsunami-wave sweeping the Pacific Ocean filter in via stories about the 8.8 earthquake that hit Japan recently. and thecelebrity evacuations due to the warnings up and down the Pacific Coast. Hawaii was in the path of the tsunami, but escaped devastation. The Pacific Coast now awaits a turn to brave the storm, and many worry how much force it will have gained by the time it hits the coast. Residents of Lincoln City, Oregon, have a tsunami evacuation map to study before crunch time, as well as a tsunami warning system, but residents are warned not to wait for an official warning.
